Portugal is to home to Douro, which is legally the oldest wine producing area in the world, being legislated in 1756, specifically for the production of Port.

Unlike other European countries, Portugal has always remained as a fringe wine producing region, mainly because of the hard to remember and pronounce grapes such as Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Cão, Tinta Roriz (the same as Spain’s Tempranillo), Touriga Francesa and Touriga Nacional, and the white grapes like Alvarhino, Maria Gomes and Cercial.

But don’t be put off by what you aren’t familiar with as Portuguese wines offer some of the best value wines in the world, particularly from Douro and Dao, and for whites, look no further that Vinho Verde.
