Made from a blend of Garnacha and Tempranillo, the typical blend of Rioja, this is a full bodied, dry and rich red wine. It is spicy, with dark red fruits and hints of ginger nut biscuits. A superb glass of wine with a really wacky label. Whether the label ignites your curiousity or baffles you, this wine is a must try. Definitely have it with food, we would pair it with red meat, and if you can open it an hour before you drink it.
Wines from the Toro region are very interesting, they are largely produced from the same grapes as Rioja, but as its so intensely hot there, the wines are much darker in colour and intense in flavour. El Oso y la Alemana’ which translates as the The Bear and the German Girl, is a project by, yes you’ve guessed it, a bear and a German girl. The bear in question is Oriol Illa and Susana Pastor is the German girl, and they have a small family run business focusing on biodynamically farmed vineyards and letting nature express itself. The wines are thrilling, and excellent value for money.
