An Irish Times Wine of the Week Made from low-yielding Merlot with the balance comprising of Bordeaux's two other great grapes, Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Turcaud Rouge is deliciously fruity with cherry and spices and a soft velvety medium bodied mouthfeel. Think red berry fruit, spices and herbs. An absolutely superb value for money red from France. And that is saying something! Located 25 km south of Saint-Emilion in Merlot country,  Chateau Turcaud is an immaculate 45-ha vineyard, planted on gravely slopes, the house, now completely renovated, adjoins the meticulously maintained and well-equipped winery in the back.

At last we found a delicious Pinot Noir at an affordable price ! We love this for its soft red fruity flavours and the mild earthy undertones. Pinot Noir is a difficult grape to grow with its thin skins and fragile nature, the result is that they are hard to find at an affordable price point. Domaine de Bachellery has a very long history of winemaking with records dating back to 1584. A true testament to the potential of wine which is produced here. The reputation of the wine at the domaine has been forged over centuries. The Julien family took over here during the 1980s and produce vibrant and intense wines.

These new kids on the block in Piedmont are making waves and for good reason. Their Barbera is a sweet and juicy little number. Bright, vibrant and ripe, the dark colour is slightly deceptive as its medium bodied and very easy to drink. Good with or without food. Pietro Zardini’s Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore is a full bodied, smooth and concentrated red wine. Aged for about 2 years in oak barrels and barrique, it’s a joyous wine with intense mocha, black fruits and tobacco flavours. Zardini’s Valpoicella Ripasso is made like a traditional Valpolicella with the additional step of 30 days contact with marc from his Amarone. This coupled with the high quality grape selection and oak treatment results in this rich and velvety Ripasso.

A medium-full bodied red wine that is reminiscent of Premium Australian Shiraz. It has those rich and spicy red fruit flavours like a raspberry tart. Despite the robust nature of the wine, it is very refreshing and has a silky, velvety mouthfeel. This is definitely a wine for those who love Australian Shiraz for its big, bold flavours. This is instant gratification in a glass. Priorat is a mecca for those who love big red wines. The rugged landscape and intense heat produces old vine Garnacha worthy of its price tag.  The owner here, Alfredo Arribas, is one of the rising stars of the region, having spent the start of his working life as an architect.
